Art Talk

Gerald Murphy's Bibliothèque
In the 1920s, Yale-educated Gerald Murphy epitomized the modern American. He and his wife, Sara, are perhaps best remembered as the captivating expatriates who inspired F. Scott Fitzgerald's Tender Is the Night. Murphy was a brilliant and inventive painter, but, regrettably, only seven of his canvases survive. The Gallery is fortunate to have in its collection Murphy's Bibliothèque. In this Art Talk episode, Elyse discusses the painting with a curator, poet, and conservator, who contribute unique perspectives.

Bibliothèque is on view during the exhibition Art for Yale: Collecting for a New Century, through January 13, 2008, and again during the special exhibition Making It New: The Art and Style of Sara and Gerald Murphy, February 26–May 4, 2008.

Featuring: Elyse Nelson, Yale College ’09; Helen A. Cooper, the Holcombe T. Green Curator of American Paintings and Sculpture, Yale University Art Gallery; Nancy Kuhl, Associate Curator of American Literature, Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library; and Mark Aronson, Chief Paintings Conservator, Yale Center for British Art.
