Focus On looks closely at the details of great works of art. The feature presents new and ongoing research by students, curators, and invited guests on works in the collection. New projects will be added to these pages every semester.

The Power of Ugliness:
A Bronze Gorgon from Ancient Greece
Matthew McCarty ’06, investigates an ancient figurine in the Gallery’s collection representing a mythological human-beast, the gorgon. Based on a gallery talk by curator Susan Matheson, this feature looks closely at the details to highlight and consider the tension between ugly and beautiful.

Matthew McCarty is the Frank Goodyear Intern in the Department of Ancient Art under the direction of Susan Matheson, Chief Curator and the Molly and Walter Bareiss Curator of Ancient Art.
