Object Lessons was conceived as a faculty lectures series organized by Yale University undergraduate students, featuring professors from a variety of humanities-based disciplines across campus. Lectures focused on specific works of art from the Yale University Art Gallery’s collection and were given in the presence of the objects. This publication presents selected lectures from the Object Lessons series on Martin Johnson Heade’s Sudden Shower: Newbury Marshes, Paul Cézanne’s House of Dr. Gachet, Alberto Giacometti’s Standing Woman, Robert Morris’s Untitled (Version 1 in 19 Parts), and Dieter Roth’s Duck Hunt.

The Katharine Ordway Collection
Paper, 124 pp., 21 color plates, 38 black-and-white illus.
ISBN 0-89467-025-5
Introduction by Alan Shestack, commentaries by Lesley K. Baier.
Published in 1983, this catalogue celebrates the 1980 bequest of Katharine Ordway’s significant collection of modern art, including paintings by Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, and Jackson Pollock. Also featured is the first work purchased with income from the fund she gave the Gallery, Stuart Davis’s Schwitzki’s Syntax (1961–64), with its well-known “Champion” spark plug logo. The checklist at the end of the book suggests the range of Ordway’s collection: a twelfth-century Cambodian carving, a Byzantine tempera, Alaskan scrimshaw, and a landscape by seventeenth-century Dutch painter Salomon van Ruysdael, among other works.
